In case you haven’t heard: They’re making a semi-CGI movie about the Smurfs. [link expired]
I’m going to go ahead and take a slightly controversial position on this: I think it is a fantastic idea.
When I was a little fellow, I was a Smurf fan. They were part of my regular Saturday Morning Cartoon Marathon, and I owned several figurines. I even vaguely remember “playing smurfs” at some point, which was probably similar to playing “Batman and Superman” but with less fighting and ill-advised jumping off of garage roofs.
As I grew older, I eventually realized how insanely bizarre the Smurf concept was — a tribe of tiny blue people who live in mushrooms in the forest, each one with a specific talent-based identity, and only one of them is old, and only one is a girl, and later on there was a baby, and there’s an old wizard who wants to eat them(?), or at least kill them. That’s not a cartoon premise, it’s a fever dream.
And I think it will make a wonderfully bizarre CGI/live-action movie. What’s the point of CGI if we can’t translate our fever dreams to film? We can, AND WE MUST!
Bring on the Smurfs, I say!

As I recall, you also took a slightly controversial position on “Cabin Boy.”
History will vindicate me, re: Cabin Boy. I’m slightly less confident about the Smurf movie. But still confident.
I will wait the progress of Smurf movie. It sounds good that it will be made as semi CGI movie, because there are some charachters are human and animal.
