Every once in a while I figure something out that I should have figured out years and years and years ago.
A prime example: Last night I realized for the very first time that the office supply chain “Staples” isn’t just named after a particular office supply item (staples), but also after a general category of goods (staples).
Oh, Madison Avenue, you coy seducer: What other wonders do you hold in store for me, if I’d only care to notice???
(I’d ask you not to mock me for this, but… this is mock-worthy.)

You know, I had a similar experience with “Every kiss begins with Kay.” I’m embarrassed to say that I didn’t get the “cleverness” of that either until quite recently.
I also just noticed the other day that the FedEx logo has a big arrow in it.
It’s really depressing when you realize that mass market advertising, which is generally aimed at the lowest common denominator, is often above my head.

Jonathan: I think maybe I knew the Kay one, but I’m not sure. I definitely knew the FedEx one, but only because I read somebody’s blog post about it at some point.
